Sri Lanka Launches WhatsApp Support to Help Vehicle Owners Get Fuel QR Codes
Sri Lanka’s fuel distribution system has taken a digital turn and now, getting your fuel QR code could be as simple as sending a WhatsApp message.
What's happening?
Sri Lanka launched a mandatory QR code-based fuel distribution system on March 15, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. Fuel stations across the island are no longer permitted to dispense fuel to vehicles that haven’t registered and obtained a QR code.
The government has also announced weekly fuel quotas motorcycles are allocated 5 litres, cars 15 litres, vans 40 litres, and buses up to 60 litres per week.
How to get your QR code via WhatsApp
A dedicated WhatsApp service has been introduced at 076 000 1919 to assist vehicle owners with FuelPass registration. Users need to send their vehicle number as a text message and then submit required documents including their NIC or passport, vehicle licence, and Certificate of Registration (CR). Only the registered owner is eligible to apply, and all submitted data will be handled under the Personal Data Protection Act and deleted after verification. Daily Mirror
Province-wise WhatsApp support now available
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has set up nine dedicated WhatsApp numbers covering all provinces to assist those still unable to register or update their details. Users can submit their information, which will be verified before any outdated records are cleared from the system. Newsfirst
Why was this introduced?
Authorities moved to implement the QR system to manage fuel reserves amid supply disruptions linked to the ongoing military situation in the Middle East, according to the Ministry of Energy.
Watch out for scams!
Sri Lanka CERT has confirmed that https://fuelpass.gov.lk is the only official website for the National Fuel Pass System. The public is urged not to click suspicious links or share personal data with any unofficial websites or third parties. Fake websites and social media posts have been circulating, falsely claiming to offer fuel QR code registration.
Hundreds of thousands already helped
The CPC has confirmed that issues affecting nearly 600,000 faulty QR codes have already been resolved. A special crackdown is also underway to identify individuals attempting to get fuel by falsely claiming they haven’t registered. Newsfirst
